‘Subeh Hoti Hai Shaam Hoti Hai’ – Mirza Ghalib (1797-1869)

.
The sun doth rise and the sun doth set
And thus is life’s allowance met
.
.
subeh hoti hai shaam hoti hai
(morning happens, evening happens)
umr yun hi tamaam hoti hai
(life like-this complete happens)
.
.
Time, inexorable and relentless, catches up with everyone – and all lives, significant or not, vanish in its flow. Ghalib was aware of this absurdity about existence and aptly expresses it in these verses.
