‘Karta Tha To Kyun Kiya’ – Kabir (1440-1518)

.
You did what you did before
So why now regret the deed?
Why expect sweet and luscious fruit
After sowing a bitter seed?
.
.

karta tha to kyun kiya, ab kare kyun pachtaye
(when-did then why did, now done why regret)
boya ped babool ka, to aam kahan se paye
(sowed plant babool of, so mango from-where will get)
.
.
Kabir specifies the Babool (acacia) tree and the Aam (mango) in his doha. I have substituted them with more universal terms so the idiom doesn’t overpower the translation.
