‘Ab To Ghabra Ke Ye Kehte Hain’ by Ibrahim Zauq (1789-1854)

.
.
Despair ofttimes
Makes me wish this life to cease;
But where would there be to go
If even death won’t bring me peace?
.
.
ab to ghabra ke ye kehte hain ki mar jayenge
(now then despair-in this say that die will-we)
mar ke bhi chain na paaya to kidhar jayenge
(death even also rest/peace no receive then where go-we)
.
.
Shiekh Ibrahim Zauq was the poet laureate and tutor to the last Mughal emperor of India, Bahadur Shah Zafar. He was also the chief rival of Ghalib, his great contemporary.
